Background of the Study
Antenatal care (ANC) is crucial for the health of pregnant women and their unborn children, as it provides an opportunity for early identification and management of potential health complications, such as hypertension, infections, and gestational diabetes. Proper antenatal care is associated with improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes, including a reduction in maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as better neonatal survival rates (WHO, 2023). In Nigeria, the importance of ANC is well recognized; however, the uptake of these services remains low in many regions, particularly in rural and underserved areas (UNICEF, 2023). Kogi State, located in central Nigeria, is one such area where maternal and child health indicators remain poor despite efforts to improve health service delivery.
Studies have shown that the utilization of ANC services in Kogi State is influenced by several factors, including socio-economic status, cultural beliefs, access to healthcare facilities, and awareness of the benefits of ANC (Oluwaseun & Fola, 2024). A significant proportion of women in rural areas of Kogi State still deliver at home without the assistance of skilled healthcare providers, which increases the risk of maternal and neonatal complications (Adebayo et al., 2023). While the government has initiated various programs to improve the availability and accessibility of ANC services, challenges such as transportation, insufficient healthcare infrastructure, and a shortage of trained personnel continue to impede effective service delivery.
This study seeks to assess the availability and utilization of antenatal care services in Kogi State, examining the factors that affect the access and uptake of these services, with the aim of providing insights for improving maternal healthcare in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of antenatal care services in Kogi State, many women, particularly in rural areas, do not utilize these services adequately, leading to poor maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Low utilization of ANC services is linked to various factors, including cultural beliefs, financial constraints, and inadequate infrastructure (Ajayi & Ojo, 2023). Although the government and NGOs have made efforts to improve the availability of ANC services, the challenges in access, affordability, and awareness continue to undermine their effectiveness in improving maternal health outcomes.
The problem is compounded by the limited research on the specific barriers to the utilization of ANC services in Kogi State, making it difficult to design targeted interventions. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the availability, accessibility, and utilization of ANC services in Kogi State and identifying strategies to enhance the uptake of these services.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the availability of antenatal care services in Kogi State, including the number of healthcare facilities offering ANC services.
2. To examine the factors that influence the utilization of antenatal care services by pregnant women in Kogi State.
3. To identify strategies that can be implemented to improve the utilization of ANC services in Kogi State.
Research Questions
1. What is the availability of antenatal care services in Kogi State?
2. What factors influence the utilization of antenatal care services by pregnant women in Kogi State?
3. What strategies can improve the utilization of antenatal care services in Kogi State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a positive relationship between the availability of antenatal care services and their utilization in Kogi State.
2. Socio-economic factors, such as income level and education, significantly influence the utilization of antenatal care services in Kogi State.
3. Cultural beliefs and attitudes towards ANC are negatively associated with the utilization of antenatal care services in Kogi State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the availability and utilization of antenatal care services in Kogi State, particularly in both urban and rural areas. It will explore factors influencing access to ANC services, including socio-economic and cultural barriers. Limitations include challenges in accessing rural communities and potential biases in self-reported data.
